National Sunglasses Day

Curtis for National Sunglasses Day 2025.

National Sunglasses Day — a commemorative day celebrating the importance of wearing ultraviolet (UV)-protective sunwear and eyewear — is brought to life each year by The Vision Council on June 27.

Celebrate

Celebrate National Sunglasses Day by wearing your favorite pair of shades while enjoying the benefits of eye protection, style and fun. Get those shades out, and have a good time tomorrow. Oh . . . and tell your friends.

Curtis is up for it for sure. So handsome.

Curtis Hattingdon

Curtis the First

Curtis, by the way, is the very first cartoon horse Vivian created — and the only one — until she created and introduced a lady hat-wearing cartoon horse a few years later. From there it took off like a rocket. Vivian has designed 100s of hats for Hattingdon since that time. It all began with Curtis.

Curtis Hattingdon peeks out from this banner. So handsome!

Curtis is Vivian’s first love and always will be. He also happens to be the first cartoon horse she ever created, and the forerunner of what was to become Hattingdon Horses.

It is easy to see why she is so devoted to him. He is also wickedly handsome. Sigh.

Vivian’s Fave Hats: Letter C

This post features a very, very special Hattingdon. Can you guess who it is already? Let’s see if you are right.

Here are the hats Vivian selected beginning with the letter C.

Classic Hat

It was a close call but Vivian finally chose this one. We love it too.

We have lost count of the number of tees, tote bags and mugs we sold this design on for Halloween!

Fashion

This is the daddy of them all, the very first Hattingdon . . . ever. Vivian created Curtis during Christmas recess while she was lobbying on behalf of horses in Washington D.C. Curtis was an immediate sensation and helped raise a lot of money to help a lot of horses, then and many years thereafter.

Is he, or is he not, so very handsome?

Flashback Harper

Hattingdon is so pretty in pink in this Chanel inspired fashion hat. Vivian named the hat Harper. But there is much more to the story.

Harper is the second Hattingdon horse created by Vivian.

Curtis was the first and only Hattingdon for a long time — about two years.

Curtis merchandise did very well. We saw Curtis tee shirts all around the D.C. area, and eventually around the country and other countries too. This helped us immensely in raising the necessary funds to lobby and take action on behalf of horses who were in harm’s way.

For those of you who do not know Curtis yet, here he is — Mrs Farrell’s first and truest love!

Curtis the First.

Is he handsome . . . or is he handsome?

Now . . . back to the Harper story.

Staff continued to bug Mrs Farrell about creating another “Hattingdon”. So one snowy evening in 2009, two years after she created Curtis (also on a snowy evening), she created Harper — a sophisticated, very girlish Hattingdon— and that is how Harper “was born.”

Hattingdon Horses is the cartoon horses’ series name, and each hat is given its own distinctive name.

Happy Flashback Friday.
