August Classic Hat Special

Seven Classic Hats featured image.

Greetings! Vivian created her very first cartoon horse while awaiting the outcome of several last minute Committee meetings in Washington D.C. that could impact the safety of our horses. Christmas was just around the corner, and she was miserable and wanted to go home.

To distract herself from her mood, she got on the computer and started playing around in Photoshop, until at last she had what she wanted — a cartoon horse — to help raise money to benefit horses, and to make people laugh of course. She named him Curtis. Isn’t he handsome? What is it about “first borns”? Sigh.

Curtis the First.

Curtis was, and still is, a huge success, and became the beginning of what would eventually evolve into a large family of hat wearing cartoon horses.

Vivian was pressed to design more, which she did. In order to save precious time, she created what she eventually named the “classic hat” silhouette (see below), which would be fast and easy to design for. She named the first one Eve.

Eve Classic

As of this writing Vivian has designed more than 70 classic hats.

Recently she was asked by Classic Hat Fans to do a series, here on the blog, of people’s top favorite classic hats of all time.

Open quote in Hattingdon brown.

“I was thrilled to be asked. I am even more thrilled to do it. There are some very, very pretty classic hats. This will be their big moment to shine!

I chose fifteen designs altogether. We will blog three classic hats per week throughout the five weeks of August. Stay tuned so you do not miss out on any of the fun.”

Bye for now. Love, Vivian and Hattingdon.

Red Shoe day

Pretty red shoes.

Gear up for Tuesday, July 25th with red shoes for a great cause. Any type. Any style. The only rule? They must be red.

International Red Shoe Day remembers and celebrates all those who have passed away from Lyme disease and other “invisible diseases” such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. It was founded in memory of Theda Myint of Australia, who passed away from Lyme disease on July 25, 2013.

The year she died, her government continued to insist Lyme disease did not exist in that country — though many of its citizens were seriously ill from it. This day has quickly become established as an annual remembrance day to remember not only Theda, but all those others who are lost to Lyme and other invisible illnesses around the world.

Vivian created a hat in honour of International Red Shoe Day to help raise awareness. Hattingdon chose an unforgettable, attention-grabbing red stiletto fashion hat.

Theda Hattingdon.

International Red Shoe Day has also become a day to celebrate the importance of shoes, and to raise awareness of the millions of children who don’t have them.

People around the world are encouraged to donate new or gently used shoes to charity. In Australia, the charity that receives the most donations on International Red Shoe Day is Reach Out Australia, which helps provide shoes and footwear for children in need.

You can help

Share Theda’s story. Donate new or gently used shoes locally. Thank you!

The name Morgan

Usually Vivian is able to choose a name for a Hattingdon hat right away. This time it was a bit different. Finally, the name “Morgan” suddenly popped in her head. She thought . . . yes! Vivian knew it was a Welsh name, being from the UK. Look what it means.

Very Well Family tell us:

Open quote in Hattingdon brown.

The name Morgan means “sea-born,” “sea-song,” or “sea-circle.” It is traditionally a boy’s name of Welsh origin, and more specifically, a variant of the Old Welsh name Morcant which is a combination of the Welsh elements mor, meaning “sea” and cant, meaning “circle.”

Perfect. Serendipity at work.

Shiver me timbers

Ever wonder where that expression comes from? We did too. Look.

Open quote in Hattingdon brown.

In heavy seas, ships would be lifted up and pounded down so hard as to “shiver” the timbers, startling the sailors. Such an exclamation was meant to convey a feeling of fear and awe, similar to, “Well, blow me down!”, or, “May God strike me alive and well”. Source »

See you again soon.
