Columbus Day 2024

Columbus Day artwork by Inside the Hood

Columbus Day is a national holiday in many countries of the Americas and elsewhere, and a federal holiday in the United States, which officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. He went ashore at Guanahaní, an island in the Bahamas, on October 12, 1492

On his return in 1493, he moved his coastal base of operations 70 miles east to the island of Hispaniola, what is now the Dominican Republic and established the settlement of La Isabela, the first permanent Spanish settlement in the Americas. Source: Wikipedia.

We are celebrating Columbus Day with Hattingdon’s Quinn sweetheart hat.

Flashback Friday with Whitney

Whitney Hattingdon blog banner for post.

These are such lovely hats and some of our most popular. Hattingdon looks wonderful in them.Vivian first created the Whitney hat in 2016. It was an immediate hit. Then she reimagined it a couple of years later — in 2018. From first to last, these designs have been an all time top favorite, Let’s take a look.

Whitney the First

Here is the first Whitney design. It has a sort of safari thing going on. Oh. Vivian designed a butterfly to go with it. Lovely.

Whitney the First.

The Whitney design above became very popular very quickly. Several years later, Vivian reimagined the Whitney hat, and wow. A superstar was born.

Whitney the Second

Isn’t she lovely? This design has never moved out of the top ten most popular Hattingdon designs of all time. We hope you enjoyed seeing her again, and she brings you a “hatful of smiles”.

Autumn and a poem

by Charmaine Jewell

Vivian loves poetry, especially A. E. Houseman who wrote a beauty about Autumn. Before we talk about that, here is a hat Vivian was inspired to create in the Fall of 2019 which she named Autumn.

Autumn Hattingdon colorful fall hat from Fall leaves.

By the way, the above is a recreation. The flash drive that the original Autumn was stored on was lost. At long, long last Vivian had time to recreate it — in all its glorious colors. Wow! We love it and hope you love it too.

Now . . . the poem.

A. E. Houseman

Now the poem.

A. E HOUSEMAN

Tell me not here, it needs not saying

A. E. Housman

Tell me not here, it needs not saying,
What tune the enchantress plays
In aftermaths of soft September
Or under blanching mays,
For she and I were long acquainted
Knowing all her ways.

On russet floors, by waters idle,
The pine lets fall its cone;
The cuckoo shouts all day at nothing
In leafy dells alone;
And traveller’s joy beguiles in Autumn
Hearts that lost their own.

Autumn was the season of choice by poet A. E. Housman (1859-1936).

September Close

We had a fabulous September this year didn’t we? And how cool is it that we are able to round out the month up with a visit from cousin Marcus. Isn’t he lovely? Sigh.

Thank you everyone who visited with us throughout September, and gave us a “like” or two or three and made a comment. We really appreciate it.

Love, Hattingdon & Co.
