National Creativity Day

Hey there. Today, May 30th, is “National Creativity Day”.

“You don’t need to be a painter or a poet to “be creative” — and thank goodness for that. National Creativity Day, celebrated every May 30, was created to invite everyone to tap into their imagination, embrace new ideas, and express themselves… in whatever form feels right.

Whether that’s cooking, songwriting, parenting, reorganizing your bookshelves by color (no notes), or mowing lines in your lawn just so, creativity comes in many shapes and sizes — and all of them are meaningful and worthwhile.

A brief history

This holiday was established in 2018 by Hal Croasmun and ScreenwritingU to highlight the power of imagination and recognize the many different ways people create.

Since then, it’s become a meaningful annual reminder to step outside our routines and make something — anything. It’s also a chance to pause and notice the small ways you’re already being creative in daily life. Your gut instinct might be to say, “Oh, I’m not a creative person.” But we’re willing to bet you are — and you just might not be giving yourself enough credit.

Creativity isn’t just about creating art — it’s part of how we live. Read full article at AOL »

Nat’l Cake Day, November 26

Slide over pie, it is National Cake Day when cake takes center stage as the dessert of choice.

On most birthdays, the cake is topped with candles no matter their age. Cake is served at showers, weddings, retirements and anniversaries, to name but a few. Add ice cream, and you have America’s two top favorite desserts in the same dish!

Cakes typically contain a combination of flour, sugar, eggs, and butter or oil. Additionally, some variety of liquid, such as milk or water, creates a batter. A leavening agent such as yeast or baking powder helps the cake rise. Flavorful ingredients are often added, for example, chopped nuts, fresh, candied or dried fruit, fruit purees, or extracts. Though we commonly think of cake with frosting or icing, many cakes can be enjoyed with just fruit or other toppings.

Here is Hattingdon modeling two of her birthday cake hats. Delicious! There are more of course. Vivian is rarely satisfied with making just one or two of something.

The Hill Sisters

Have you heard of the mostly unknown sisters behind the song “Happy Birthday to You” — they are Mildred and Patty Hill.

It is a fascinating and sometimes tangled story. We have read quite a few writings on it, and recommend reading the Smithonian’s first. Read it at The Forgotten Sisters Behind ‘Happy Birthday’ at Smithonian Magazine.

National Peach Day

August 27 is National Peach Day on the National Day Calendar to celebrate one of summertime’s most scrumptious fruits known as the peach!

August is prime peach season in the U.S. and we want everyone to enjoy a few peaches, plus remember the hardworking peach growers who provide us with this delicious fruit.

Here is our Hattingdon in a classic hat in peach. We named the design Tangie.

Canada Day

Happy Canada Day.

Hattingdon celebrates Canada Day in a Canadian flag inspired red and white puffy cap with large upturned brim. Vivian named the hat Zoe.

Canada Day is often referred to as “Canada’s birthday”, particularly in the popular press.

Wikipedia, the fount of all knowledge (wink), tells us:

Open Quote

The term “birthday” can be seen as an oversimplification, as Canada Day is the anniversary of only one important national milestone on the way to the country’s full sovereignty, namely the joining on July 1, 1867, of the colonies of Canada (divided into Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a wider British federation of four provinces.

Canada became a “kingdom in its own right” within the British Empire, commonly known as the Dominion of Canada.” End Quote

Best wishes to Canada and all of her wonderful citizens.
