Lollipop classic

In 1908, candy maker George Smith revolutionized the candy world by creating a hard candy mounted on a stick, the first modern lollipop. According to his memoirs, he named the treat after his favorite racehorse — Lolly Pop.

National Lollipop Day is celebrated each year on July 20. It is a day to celebrate hard candy, sweet treats and being a kid.

Hattingdon does not have a “lollipop hat” per se, but she does have a very pretty classic hat inspired by the sweet lollipop Vivian created, seen below.

We named the design Lolly. Hattingdon fans call it the Lollipop hat. That’s cool. Here she is.

Isn’t she sweet? Love love love the colours. Oh. Before we go, here is a bit of lollipop history.

History of the Lollipop

Jon Prince, writing for CandyFavourites.com, states, “The first incarnation of the lollipop was probably created by cave people thousands of years ago, who collected honey from beehives with a stick. Not wanting to waste the sweet nectar, they most likely licked the stick, thus inventing the world’s first lollipop. Good for them (good for us).”

“Archaeologists believe that ancient Chinese, Arabs, and Egyptians all produced fruit and nut confections that they ‘candied’ in honey (which serves as a preservative), and inserted sticks to make it easier to eat.”

What are your favourite lollipops? Let us know. Love, Hattingdon.

Some years ago Vivian experimented with the idea of a Hattingdon magazine. She named it Hatsquisite. This is the only remaining cover we have, which we just happened to find on an old flashdrive. What do you think?

The design is “so Vivian” isn’t it? Wish she would go further with idea. She may be reconsidering it. By the way that name — Sassy Topper, hahaha! What an imagination the old gal has. Wink.

We know it is late in the day and not the optimum time to post, according to those who report on such things. But we thought it would be fun to share this darling hat.

Vivian designed it in 2018, and named the hat Breeze. Isn’t she magnificent? Breeze . . . that is! Wink.

Cherie Classic

What is red and pink and teal all over? How about the Cherie Classic hat?

If you are new to Hattingdon, you will not know what a “classic hat” is. Well, it started like this.

Vivian, the creator of Hattingdon Horses, had designed a boatload of hats for Hattingdon. She felt she might soon be running out of ideas for new ones. There are only so many hat styles and silhouettes, aren’t there?

So Vivian set about creating a hat silhouette unique to Hattingdon and design for it. The result was a hat with a round dome with a simple medium sized brim created in basic black.

When she first shared it, one of her friends said, “It is very classy or . . . classic looking isn’t it.” Vivian replied yes it was. When thinking about what to call it, the name Eve suddenly popped into her head. Perfect, she thought . . . it being the first of its kind.

She began designing more right away . . . . naturally. We have never thought to count them but it is believed in the neighborhood 60 classic hat designs have been created over the years. That’s Vivian!

Cherie

We now come to today’s classic hat. Vivian named the hat Cherie. The color combination is superb; so very pretty.

The Cherie classic hat is made of a lovely pink dome, a rich red brim and a medium hatband in teal. Front and center on the dome is a fetching button in those colors. Pink nosebobs complete the look.

Nosebobs you ask . . . ?

You have heard the charming term used for earrings as earbobs, right? We believe it comes from the American South (think Gone with the Wind). Well . . . . nosebobs are the bobs on Hattingdon’s noseband. How about that? Wink.

By the way. There are now only three classic hats left in the current series. Sigh!
