Deidre Classic

Greetings and salutations on this Classic Hat Monday. Today we have a fabulous classic hat for you, called Deidre.

The Deidre classic hat is a black hat with a striking red hatband. The hat’s dome and brim features a line of white houndstooth on them. Coordinating red ‘nosebobs’ complete the look.

By the way, we are often asked how we came up with the word ‘nosebobs’. Easy. We modeled it on earrings being called ‘earbobs’, a term used in the Old South of the United States for earrings or eardrops.

The classic hat

The classic hat is very, very popular and has been from the day it was launched in 2009. There are still many Hattingdon fans who prefer the classic hat to any other hats that she wears. How did it come about?

After a year or two of making a wide variety of hats for Hattingdon, Vivian created a basic hat silhouette with a round dome and medium wide brim. Then she started designing for it, and it ultimately became a series with a big following. She named it the “classic hat.”

The classic hat became popular right away, and enjoys a dedicated fanbase that is still going strong today, more than a dozen years later.

Hello there. Vivian whipped up a new classic hat design and called it Splash. It is inspired by the work of renown creative artist Jackson Pollock. She recently renamed the design Jackie Splash in honour of Mr Pollock. You can use either one.

Vivian has always been a huge Pollock fan. Take a look at some of the the work of this fascinating artist.

Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was an influential American painter, and the leading force behind the abstract expressionist movement in the art world. During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety.

Jackson Pollock’s greatness lies in developing one of the most radical abstract styles in the history of modern art, detaching line from color, redefining the categories of drawing and painting, and finding new means to describe pictorial space.

Even more than a century since his birth, American “splatter artist” Jackson Pollock still provokes heated debate about the very definition of art. Was a man who placed a canvas on the floor and dripped paint straight from the can actually creating a work of art? Watch WBUR.org »

Here are a few examples from this exciting, groundbreaking artist. The first is Vivian’s all-time favourite.

Becky Classic

Black and white are, strictly speaking, not colours. However, light and dark play a major role in art and design and have various symbolic meanings.

WHITE
In many cultures, white is seen as the colour of innocence and virginity, purity, loyalty and peace. In the West, white clothing and decoration are symbolic of the joy around births, baptisms and weddings. The colour is also associated with women as virgins, mothers and caregivers.

‘Colours are wavelengths reflected by objects to the human eye.
White is pure light and black is the absence of light’

BLACK
Black has different associations across cultures and religions: death, mystery and the darker side of human nature but also power, nobility and prestige.

BLACK & WHITE
Opposites attract. In the case of black and white, contrast creates completion. The convergence of black and white (more so than any other color combination) is an example of how two divergent colors communicate more powerfully together than they do on their own.

Happy Classic Hat Monday!
