Buy Nothing Day

Just in case you missed it. Have you seen this? —Hattingdon.

Buy Nothing Day is a day of protest against consumerism. In North America, the United Kingdom, Finland and Sweden, Buy Nothing Day is held the day after U.S. Thanksgiving, concurrent with Black Friday; elsewhere, it is held the following day, which is the last Saturday in November.

Created by artist Ted Dave and promoted by magazine and nonprofit Adbusters, Buy Nothing Day encourages people not to shop for one day.

Participants may participate in a variety of anti-consumerist and philanthropic activities, such as donating winter coats or marching through stores. Some activists have also extended Buy Nothing Day to cover the entire Christmas shopping season.

As of 2001, Buy Nothing Day was observed in over 35 countries. In the late 1990s, Adbusters created a TV commercial to promote Buy Nothing Day in the US, but most television stations refused to air it. Some commentators, particularly business groups, have criticized the event, claiming that it is economically destructive.

What’s in a name? How about this? We had no idea until we looked it up.

Nameberry informs us:-

Open quote clipart in Hattingdon brown. By Vivian.

The name Pippa is a girl’s name of English, Italian origin meaning “lover of horses”.

Pippa, a peppy condensation of Philippa that turns it from serious to sprightly, has come into the public eye in a big way, being Prince William’s sister-in-law.

Lover of horses. Perfect! Thank you for visiting with us. See you again soon.

The Goddess Artemis

Britannica.com tells us:

Open quote in Hattingdon brown.

Artemis, in Greek religion, is the goddess of wild animals, the hunt, and vegetation and of chastity and childbirth; she was identified by the Romans with Diana. Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. Among the rural populace, Artemis was the favorite goddess.

Her character and function varied greatly from place to place, but, apparently, behind all forms lay the goddess of wild nature, who danced, usually accompanied by nymphs, in mountains, forests, and marshes.

Artemis embodied the sportsman’s ideal, so besides killing game she also protected it, especially the young; this was the Homeric significance of the title Mistress of Animals.

Spooky Halloween Night

It’s very spooky on Halloween night.
The ghosts and goblins will give you a fright.

Watch your back, do not be blind.
If you’re not careful, who knows what you’ll find?

You might see things like little black bats,
Or you might see things like scary black cats.

On every porch there’s a pumpkin or two,
With their creepy grins smiling at you.

It’s very spooky on Halloween night.
