Vivian’s Fave Hats: Letter J

We are doing something a little bit different. We are are presenting a special set of hats. The design name is Jenny Rose, created with the Kentucky Derby Festival in mind. Hattingdon was “born” in Louisville by the way.

Let’s start off with the classic hat followed with two gorgeous fashion hats.

The Jennie Rose series are some of the most popular hats Vivian has ever created.

Red Roses and the Derby

Red roses became a Kentucky Derby tradition in the early 1880s. Back in 1883, ladies who attended Derby parties around Louisville all received a red rose.

The Churchill Downs President at the time, Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, saw what a success the roses were, and decided to make the association between the flower and the Kentucky Derby in 1884.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Vivian’s Fave Hats: Letter I

Hello there and welcome.

When Vivian went to select hats for this post she was astonished to find that we did not have a single hat beginning with the letter “I”. She had to address that right away.

Vivian created two brand new hats! She named the classic hat Ivy and the fashion hat Ilona.

What a lovely hat. Look at this one!

Ilona Hattingdon.

What do you think? Isn’t she a doll? It has a Roaring 20’s sort of vibe going on doesn’t it?

And the name Ilona? Wikipedia (the fount of all knowledge) states:

‘Ilona is a common name in Finland, where it is considered to refer to the Finnish word ilo (“joy”) and ilona literally means “as a joy [to someone]”. It is also common in Latvia, Estonia, France, Lithuania and Poland (formerly in crown union with Hungary).’

Bye for now. See you again soon.

Vivian’s Fave Hats: Letter D

Vivian is having a blast picking out the hats. She is seeing designs she has not come across for a really long time. She has two delightful ones for us today starting with the letter D.

Classic Hat

This is one of Vivian’s earliest classic hats and another all-time favourite. It was inspired by and in homage to Donna Karan, so she named the design Donna.

Donna Hattingdon.

Donna Karan began her career as an assistant designer to Anne Klein in the late 1960s, where she was eventually promoted to associate designer in 1971. As Klein’s assistant, Karan was a participant in The Battle of Versailles Fashion Show on November 28, 1973.

When Anne Klein died in 1974, Takihyo Corporation of Japan became the new owner and Karan, together with her former classmate and friend Louis Dell’Ollio, became head designers of the house. The rest as they say is history.

Fashion Hat

Hattingdon does not have many hats whose names start with the letter “D”, but Vivian still had to do some to-ing and fro-ing while making her selection She finally decided on the Dewey percher, named after the Dewey Decimal system . . . naturally!  Ain’t she sweet?

The Dewey Decimal system was first published in the United States by Melvil Dewey in 1876. He was also a founding member of the American Library Association. Go Melvil!

Aren’t you glad you stopped by? You not only get to see a cute hats but also pick up the occasional interesting nugget or two. See you again soon.

Happy New Year 2023

Colorful fireworks!

Greetings and welcome!

Here we are again at the start of another new year. Can you ‘Adam and Eve it?’ (that’s cockney rhyming slang for ‘can you believe it’).

Look!

Hattingdon celebrates in a top hat in what Pantone describes as the color of the year for 2023 — Viva Magenta. Vivian made the hatband white to set off that gorgeous color.

Jana Hattingdon.

Pantone writes:

“This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.”

An unconventional shade for an unconventional time, Viva Magenta is a signal of strength, inclusivity and self-expression.”

“PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.”

The hex code for the color of the hat (Viva Magenta) is #be3455. The hex code for the hatband is #9e0039.

Isn’t it delicious? Hattingdon absolutely adores it.

Happy New Year everyone!

Best wishes, with love, Hattingdon & Co.
